Dehumidifier pricing tracks capacity, measured in pints of water removed per day (ppd) at standard test conditions. The unit price is what you would pay buying it yourself. The installed price is what a contractor charges with the unit supplied, mounted, drained, and wired.

The gap between the two columns is roughly $250 to $800, and it widens on larger units because they are heavier to hang and more likely to need dedicated power. If a quote shows a 130 ppd unit installed for $900, either the unit is not what was specified or something in the install has been skipped.
What Installation Actually Adds
Installation is not just carrying the unit through the access hatch. Each of these is a real line item, and any of them can be missing from a cheap quote.
- Hanging or mounting ($75 to $250). Most commercial units are suspended from the floor joists on threaded rod and unistrut, or set on a raised platform above the liner. Suspension keeps the unit out of any water event and reduces vibration transfer into the floor above. Platform mounting is cheaper but only acceptable where flooding risk is genuinely zero.
- Condensate drain line or pump ($75 to $300). A crawl space rarely has a gravity drain at a usable elevation. Most installs run a line to daylight, to a sump pit, or use the unit's built-in pump to push condensate uphill and out. Long runs, freeze protection on exterior sections, and a new pump where the unit lacks one all push this higher.

- Ducting ($150 to $500). Optional but common in long or partitioned crawl spaces. Short supply and return ducts push dry air toward the far corner instead of letting the unit recirculate the same air near itself. In an L-shaped or multi-wing space this often matters more than buying a bigger unit.
- Controls and humidistat setup ($0 to $150). Setting the target relative humidity and, on units that support it, wiring or pairing a remote monitor so you can see the crawl space reading without opening the hatch.

Why a Dedicated Circuit Is Often Needed
A 90 to 130 ppd commercial dehumidifier typically draws 5 to 8 amps continuously. Continuous loads are supposed to sit at no more than 80 percent of the circuit rating, which means a unit like that wants most of a 15 amp circuit to itself. Crawl space receptacles, where they exist at all, are frequently shared with exterior outlets, a sump pump, or a lighting circuit that was never intended to carry a load running 10 hours a day.
Signs a dedicated circuit is going into your quote: a line for a new 15 or 20 amp breaker, a run of 12/2 or 14/2 cable from the panel, and a GFCI receptacle at the unit. Expect an electrician to charge $250 to $600 for a straightforward run, more if the panel is on the opposite side of the house, if the panel is full and needs a tandem breaker or a subpanel, or if the work triggers a permit and inspection.

Annual Running Cost: The Number Most Quotes Leave Out
This is where a crawl space dehumidifier quietly becomes expensive. The install is a one-time number. The electricity bill is not.
The arithmetic is simple enough to do with your own utility rate. Take the unit's nameplate power draw in watts, multiply by hours of runtime, divide by 1,000 to get kilowatt-hours, then multiply by your cost per kWh.
Worked example
Assume a 90 ppd commercial unit drawing 600 watts while the compressor runs. In a humid Southeast summer, a correctly sized unit in an encapsulated crawl space cycles rather than running flat out, but it runs a lot. Assume an average of 10 hours per day across the year, heavier in July and August, much lighter in winter. Assume electricity at 15 cents per kWh.
- 600 watts ÷ 1,000 = 0.6 kW
- 0.6 kW × 10 hours = 6 kWh per day
- 6 kWh × 365 days = 2,190 kWh per year
- 2,190 kWh × $0.15 = about $329 per year
Every input there is an assumption, and you should replace all three with your own. If your rate is 11 cents, the same unit costs about $241 a year. If it is 22 cents, about $482. If the crawl space is well sealed and the unit averages 6 hours a day instead of 10, the 15 cent figure drops to roughly $197. Treat the result as a planning estimate, not a measurement of your house.

Two things move that number more than the model you pick. The first is whether the crawl space is sealed. A dehumidifier fighting outside air through open vents runs close to constantly, which is why the last row is the worst case on the table. A commercial crawl space dehumidifier lasts 8 to 12 years in continuous service. A residential-grade consumer unit pressed into the same duty lasts 3 to 5 years, because it was designed for a warm basement with intermittent use, not a 55 degree crawl space running most of the day. The headline result is that the cheaper unit is not cheaper. Is a crawl space dehumidifier worth the cost?
In a humid climate with a sealed crawl space, yes. A vapor barrier stops ground moisture but does nothing about the moisture already in the air or brought in through the access door. Without active dehumidification, an encapsulated space can sit above 60 percent relative humidity all summer, which is enough for mold and for wood to stay damp. In a dry climate or a well-ventilated space with consistently low readings, the case is weaker.
Can I buy the unit myself and have a contractor install it?
Often yes, and it can save the contractor markup on the equipment. The trade-off is warranty handling: many contractors will not warrant a unit they did not supply, and some manufacturer warranties are conditioned on professional installation. Ask before you buy, and get the answer in writing on the quote.
Does a bigger dehumidifier cost more to run?
