About CrawlSpaceGuide
Why this site exists
Crawl space encapsulation is one of the most consistently oversold home improvement services in the Southeast US. Contractors have strong financial incentives to recommend expensive full systems regardless of whether a homeowner actually needs one. Pricing is opaque. Most homeowners walk into contractor conversations with no independent frame of reference.
CrawlSpaceGuide was built to fix that. We publish independent cost research, plain-language explanations of what encapsulation actually does, and honest guidance on when it's worth the money and when it isn't. We also match homeowners with contractors - but we tell you upfront that's how we make money, and we maintain editorial independence from it.
What we cover
- Cost guides - Real pricing data from contractor surveys, Angi reports, and industry databases. No fabricated numbers, no vague "costs vary" non-answers.
- DIY guidance - Honest difficulty assessments and step-by-step walkthroughs for homeowners who want to do the work themselves.
- Problem diagnosis - How to identify mold, moisture, radon, and pest issues before calling a contractor, so you can distinguish real problems from contractor-manufactured ones.
- Comparisons - Side-by-side breakdowns of options (encapsulation vs vapor barrier, conditioned vs vented) that help you evaluate what contractors recommend.
- Contractor matching - When you're ready to hire, we route your project details to verified contractors in your area. We disclose when and how we earn revenue from this.
Who we are
CrawlSpaceGuide is researched and written by Aleksi Suoninen, a researcher focused on home improvement cost transparency in the Southeast US market. Aleksi is not a licensed contractor or building scientist. His work is that of an aggregator: collecting pricing data from industry sources, interviewing contractors, and translating technical information into plain language homeowners can act on.
Where technical expertise beyond research is required - mold assessment, structural evaluation, radon measurement - our guides explicitly refer readers to licensed professionals and state the limits of research-based guidance. We do not present ourselves as experts in fields where we aren't.
Our geographic focus
We focus on the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic US: North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Maryland, West Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi, and New Jersey. Crawl space construction is a regional building style, and moisture conditions in these states create specific challenges that don't apply to the drier parts of the country. Our pricing data, climate guidance, and contractor network reflect this focus.
How we make money
We're transparent about this because it matters:
- Contractor lead referrals - When you submit a lead through our calculator, we route it to contractors or lead networks and receive a referral fee. This does not affect what you pay contractors.
- Amazon affiliate commissions - Links to products (dehumidifiers, vapor barriers, materials) may earn us a small commission at no cost to you.
- Display advertising - We may display ads once traffic thresholds are reached. These will be clearly labeled.
Our revenue model creates an incentive to generate leads. We manage this by keeping editorial content separate from commercial decisions. Read our methodology page for specifics on how we source data and route leads.
